We are excited to host local author Kathy Connor Dobronyi and her book UNDER THE WINGS OF A GOOD LUCK PHOENIX.
Under the Wings of a Good Luck Phoenix is a coming-of-age story that began as a series in a local paper. The high interest shown by readers led to a cooperative effort between the paper's editor, a Vietnam veteran, and the author to write this narrative nonfiction memoir.
Kathy was one of 4,000 American civilians living in Saigon in 1963. Her father was a military advisor who brought his family on a tour of duty that was to last two years. They arrived two weeks before Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc set himself on fire in front of the Cambodian Embassy.
Nam, the 35-year-old houseboy working in the Connor household taught Kathy Vietnamese history and culture. Under the Wings of a Good Luck Phoenix is a testament of the friendship between a young American girl and a Vietnamese man who taught her that life should never be taken for granted.
Kathy Connor Dobronyi was born in New Jersey and baptized in Maryland. She was in Hawaii when it became a state and Viet Nam when it became a war. Those were the first 12 years of her life.
In 2010, Kathy participated in the Vietnam Oral History Project at Texas Tech. www.vietnam.ttu.edu/oralhistory/
Kathy lives on the west coast of Florida with her husband and their cat.
