Free-writing is the first tool we reach for when we honor the impulse to write, and the act during which that impulse either catches fire or fizzles out. Yet this fundamental skill is seldom taught or executed with much awareness or refinement—it is as if writing only has a gas pedal. Put another way, there are as many ways to free-write as there are to dance, but most people are stuck doing the frat boy two-step, and wind up filling the space of a page the same way every time no matter the subject, shutting down creative possibilities at the very start.
This workshop, led by an award-winning poet and literary journalist, will open the vault to the theory and practice of free-writing. We will learn from an immense corpus of teachings and protocols designed to liberate us from habitual patterns, broaden our range of subjects and responses, and alter the “DNA” of how we write. We will generate a volume of new material in the process—one of the a bi-products of a healthy free-writing practice is that it renders us immune to “writer’s block.
